THE NATIONAL YOUTH AUTHORITY (NYA)The National Youth Authority (NYA) which was established in 1974 by NRCD 241 is thus the Statutory Public Organization with the mandate to ensure the empowerment of the Ghanaian youth and it is under the Ministry for Youth & Sports.

The Council has the sole responsibility of inculcating in the youth, cultural and moral values that will make them responsible, self-reliant and patriotic citizens.  In pursuit of this goal, the NYA is charged with the responsibility of implementing policies and programmes that will develop and empower the youth.

One of the functions of the Council is to develop a strong and discipline youth imbued with the spirit of Nationalism and sense of public service and morality.  In furtherance of this objective, the Council initiates policies and programmes to promote in the youth a sense of:

*    Self reliance, leadership, discipline and civic responsibility.
*    Friendship and co-operation through exchange of ideas with youth organizations in other countries in Africa and the World.

MISSION
We exist to provide relevant and conducive environment that defines and supports the implementation of effective frontline youth empowerment practices, focusing on young people’s participation in socio-economic and political development whist facilitating private and third sector provider investments in youth empowerment.

VISION
To become a unique public sector youth development service delivery organization, responsive to the empowerment needs of the Ghanaian youth and ensuring their access to national development investment opportunities.

YOUTH DEFINITION AND CATEGORIZATION
In Ghana, the youth are defined as people between the ages of 15 and 35 years.

  •  Rural and Urban
  •  Male and Female
  •  Adolescent and Adults
  •  Physically Challenged and Able-Bodied
  •  In-School and Out-of-School
  •  Organized and Unorganized
  •  Skilled and Unskilled

CORE ACTIVITY OF THE NATIONAL YOUTH AUTHORITY
The NYA registers youth groups and associations throughout the country to build reliable data for effective programming. It provides out-of-school youth, especially the deprived, with skills training through the Youth Leadership and Skills training Institutes.

It organizes youth programmes to provide them with the best information to enable them make informed choices on health and career, while sensitizing them on governance, civic responsibilities and morality.

It also provides opportunities for the youth to build their own enterprises and create wealth for themselves and the nation.

The NYA runs distance education in Youth Development Work with the University of Ghana, Legon.

It also coordinates the activities of all youth organizations and formulates policies and programs in respect of all youth activities.

STRUCTURE OF THE NATIONAL YOUTH AUTHORITY

  • Board of Trustees National Secretariat headed by a National Coordinator and assisted by four Deputy National Coordinators
  • Regional Secretariats, headed by Regional Youth Coordinators
  • District Secretariats, manned by District Youth Coordinators

ADMINISTRATION OF THE NATIONAL YOUTH AUTHORITY
The National Youth Authority is an agency under the Ministry of Youth and Sports and is governed by a Board of Trustees and is headed by a National Coordinator (NC). The National Coordinator is assisted by four deputies, who are also in charge of the following departments:
