As part of activities marking the 12th Anniversary of the May 9th Accra Sports Stadium disaster, the Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with the National Sports Authority, Management of Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club, Kumasi Asante Kotoko Football Club as well as the Bereaved families of the May 9th disaster wish to inform the public of the following program to mark the day on Thursday, May 9th, 2013.
A Press Release signed on behalf of the Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah by the Head of Public Relations of the Ministry,Mr Michael Frimpong stated a number of activities to mark the day.
The program is as follows:
6.00 am – May 9th Commemoration Walk from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle (Obra Spot) to the Accra Sports Stadium by the Supporters Union groups of Ghana, and supporters of Asante Kotoko FC and Accra Hearts of Oak SC.
9.00 am – Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Forecourt of the Accra Sports Stadium by:
The Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah
Management of Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko
Representatives of the Bereaved Families.
11.00 am – Health Education and Safety Seminar
Venue: Media center, Accra Sports Stadium.
It would be recalled that Ghana was thrown into a state of mourning twelve years ago on May 9, 2001, when 126 football fans lost their lives in a stampede after a league match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.
The Ministry wishes to call on all Ghanaians to remember the victims of the disaster in their prayers and resolve to ensure that never again would such a tragedy occur.
