A project to manufacture bamboo bicycles in Ghana has been launched by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah in Yonso, Ashanti Region.

In a speech read on his behalf by the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Joseph Yammin, Hon. Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah reinforced government’s readiness to train and empower young entrepreneurs in Ghana.

The Yonso Project involves the manufacturing of bamboo bicycles by Mr Kwabena Danso, a Ghanaian young man and social entrepreneur, who was awarded as National Youth Achiever in 2012 and his international partners from Germany.

It is a project targeted at unleashing the entrepreneurial and creative potentials of young people in the Community and its surroundings.

The Yonso Project will see young people come together to produce, market and distribute bamboo bicycles from Yonso in the Ashanti Region.

In commending the initiative, the Hon. Minister stated “It is absolutely commendable that this initiative is set in the rural area and involves creating jobs for the youth as well as giving back to the society from which Mr Danso himself benefitted whilst growing up and I look forward to many more youthful entrepreneurs like him, helping to break the vicious cycle and grip that poverty has on large numbers of our people”.

The Hon. Minister declared total commitment of government to support the project. “So on behalf of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Government of Ghana, I wish to state that Government is willing and ready to support the Yonso Project and many more youth like Kwabena Danso to achieve higher laurels…

The Minister stated that the Yonso Project and Kwabena Danso’s achievements were of great significance to Government because it demonstrated the home grown potential of the Ghanaian youth to generate self-employment, promote local economic development and reduce poverty.

“This is a model that we can all subscribe to, look up to and promote for other youth across the length and breadth of our country” he added.

The Hon. Deputy Minister, who rode on one of the bamboo bikes, expressed his delight in the project and the strength of bicycles.
