A delegation of officials and team members of the Badminton Association of Ghana have called on the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports to present to him some medals and a trophy they won at the just ended International tournament in Morocco and also the Nigeria Invitational.
The delegation included Mr Nestor Galley, President of the Badminton Association of Ghana, (BAG), Mr Williams Kyei, Secretary-General; Mr Frank Shamo, Coach and Mr Wilson Jacob, also a Coach.
The Players were Abraham Ayittey, Junior player who won Gold in the men’s singles at the just ended Morocco international; Daniel Sam and Emmanuel Donkor who won Bronze in the men’s doubles at the Nigeria International; and Stella Amaah, who won bronze in the Mixed doubles at the Nigeria International.
Receiving them, the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Joseph Yammin congratulated the players for lifting high the flag of Ghana.
Hon Yammin stated that the prospects of the country making gains in such sports were great due to the youthful nature of team Ghana in Badminton.
He said that badminton was not that popular but the players had proven that with more resources and efforts, they could make a major headway.
The Deputy Minister said that badminton was a sport that needed more public attention and called on the media to highlight the achievements of the sport.
Hon. Yammin stated that the new sports law would give incentives to corporate institutions that sponsor sporting disciplines, and appealed to them to give more attention to such sports.
The President of BAG, Mr Kyei recounted the modest successes, in four tournaments so far, chalked by the team this year adding that giving the necessary support, badminton would win a lot of laurels for the country.
Mr Kyei informed the Deputy Minister that Ghana had been selected by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to host its Shuttle Time Program, and that it was in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service to soon launch the programme after taking delivery of sports items from the BWF.
