The Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with the Alhaji Aliu Mahama Foundation and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) will organize a memorial football match between a Southern Select Side and a Northern Select Side to mark the 5th Anniversary of the demise of the late Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama.
The Game which is to be played on Sunday, 12th December, 2017 would precede the grand naming of the Tamale Sports Stadium by the late Vice President.
Launching the event on Monday, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Pius Enam Hadzide disclosed that H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo will perform the official ceremonial kick before renaming the 20,000 capacity stadium.
Hon. Hadzide said the late Vice President deserved the honour following his keen interest and support for football. ‘’He was the brain behind the Real Tamale United (RTU) and rose to become the Chairman at a point. He played a massive role in improving the game up north as well as across the country’’.
According to the Deputy Sports Minister, the late Vice President’s influence in the construction of the Tamale Sports Stadium was immeasurable.
Greater Accra Regional Football Association boss, Mr. Eddie Doku will Chair the Southern Select Side with C.K. Akunnor and former National Team player, Laryea Kingston as the technical handlers. The Northern Select Side will be headed by the U-17 Management Committee boss, Kweku Ayiah with Aduana Stars title-winning Coach, Yussif Abubakar and Joseph Baah as coaches.
To mark the 5th anniversary would also be a National Fitness and Health walk sponsored by Agricultural Development Bank (ADB).
