The International Games and Competitions Committee (IGCC) held a press briefing at the Media Center of the Accra Sports Stadium as “Team Ghana” gears up for the 12th edition of the African Games to be staged in Morocco.

The Committee inaugurated by the Ministry of Youth and Sports was tasked to ensure the adequate preparations of Ghana teams at International Competitions.

The Chef De Mission, Rev. Quarcoo addressing the media disclosed that Ghana has decided to participate in fourteen (14) out of the twenty-six (26) disciplines and they include athletics, badminton, beach volley, boxing, cycling, fencing, football, weightlifting, judo, karate-do, swimming, taekwondo, table tennis and Tennis.

Rev. Quarcoo announced that 139 contingent comprising of Athletes (91), Coaches (29) and Management team (19) has been approved by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) based on the Committee’s advice for the Visa Application process.

He stated emphatically that the number of officials who will be accompanying the athletes was determined by the team size calculator which was based on the final list of athletes who will be participating in the Games.

He again noted that boxing, table tennis, taekwondo, weightlifting, fencing, karate-do and Beach Volley have been camped at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium, however, tennis, judo, swimming, badminton and cycling were camped in Accra due to the unavailability of their training facilities adding that the Football team is currently camped at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence in Prampram.

The Chef De Mission further stated that an orientation exercise has been conducted for all athletes and officials to conduct themselves as good ambassadors of Ghana.

According to him the data of the Ghanaian contingents have been entered into the Games system for accreditation and accommodation arrangements have been secured for team at the Games Village.

He noted that the first batch which includes football, beach volley and Judo teams will depart by the 13th August, 2019 due to early competition schedule, however, Team Ghana is expected to depart for Morocco by 16th August, 2019.

The Chairman of the IGCC who doubles as the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Prof. Peter Twumasi thanked the President Akufo-Addo and the Sector Minister, Hon. Isaac Kwame Asiamah for their unflinching support and the confidence reposed in the Committee to deliver on its mandate.

Prof. Twumasi called for the support and prayers of the good people of Ghana to propel the athletes to win laurels for the country.

He further stated that the budget for Ghana’s participation will be disclosed once it is approved by the Sports Ministry.
