A commemorative event has been organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, National Sports Authority and the Ghana Football Association to mark twenty (20) years of experiencing the worst football tragedy in the history of Ghana football.
The event which was held at the Accra Sports Stadium was represented by all the stakeholders in the football fraternity on the theme “never again, say no to hooliganism “.
Delivering the keynote address, the sector Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon Mustapha Ussif noted that the event could not be made worthy of commemoration without picking lessons from the circumstances that led to the unfortunate disaster.
He stressed the need for all stakeholders to continue to join hands and ensure that Ghana does not have a repetition of such a national tragedy adding that ” sports and for that matter football is one of the pillars upon which harmony and cohesion is built, no matter the rivalry, could be achieved “.
He called on all sports loving fans to collectively pursue and ensure zero tolerance for hooliganism to ensure a safe and secure environment for sports.
In a brief welcome remarks by the Director General of the National Sports Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi, he indicated that the Authority had put in place mechanisms to ensure improved entry and exit points for spectators which has provided the necessary safety and security features at the various stadia.
