Press Briefing on Ghana’s Participation in International Games & Competitions

The Director General of   the National Sports Authority,  Prof. Peter Twumasi on  Thursday, 27th  June 2019 addressed the media on measures undertaken by the committee  charged with the responsibility of overseeing Ghana’s teams preparation and participation in all International Games and Competitions.

On behalf of the Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Isaac Kwame Asiamah, MP, I warmly welcome all invited guests present here for this press briefing.

The International Games and Competitions Committee (IGCC) (also called “GAMES COMMITTEE”) which was inaugurated by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon Isaac Kwame Asiamah, MP, on the 30th March, 2019 has being charged with the responsibility of overseeing Ghana’s Teams preparation and participation in all International Games and Competitions.

The Eleven-Member Committee chaired by Prof. Peter Twumasi, the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), has since begun work in earnest to ensure a smooth and successful preparation of our athletes and eventual participation in the 2019 African Games in Rabat, Morocco.

Other Members of the Committee are:

IGCC’s TERMS OF REFERENCE (TOR)
1.1 Responsible for the overall planning for Ghana’s preparation and participation in international games and competitions, including budgeting, all travel arrangements for contingents, remuneration for athletes, officials and bonuses for medals, local camping, pre-games tournaments/competitions, international tours and pre-games camping;

1.2 Determine sporting disciplines that will take part in the requisite games and allocate actual numbers for each sport taking into consideration international federations and games requirements;

1.3 Decide with appropriate Federations, Associations or Institutions on sports equipment, kitting and general costume for all contingents;

1.4 Contract sports marketing agencies to source for sponsorship for all contingents;

1.5 Consider and advise the Ministry of Youth and Sports on all requests by Federations desiring to locally host and organize international competitions, including bilateral or trilateral games and/or international meetings of federations and bodies in line with the 6-year Ghana Sports Renaissance Plan (2019-2024). It is to be noted that all bids shall have the prior-approval of the Minister of Youth and Sports in the preceding year of the tournament or event and that such request shall be supported by a Cost-Benefit Analysis of the Bid, including all requirements to be met by the state;

1.6 Review Federations, Associations, Schools and Colleges’ support requests for preparation and participation in both national and international competitions; and

1.7 Handle any other assignment as shall be referred to the Committee by the Ministry and/or the National Sports Authority.

FORMATION OF SUB-COMMITTEES
In order to ensure efficient performance, the IGCC has also established Six (6) Sub-Committees to facilitate its work.

The following are the IGCC’s Sub-Committees and their Heads:
i. Technical Sub-committee – Dr. Owusu-Ansah
ii. Medical Sub-committee –Mr. Richard Akpokavie
iii. Protocol Sub-committee–Rev.Richmond Quarcoo
iv. Logistics Sub-committee–Mr.George Owusu-Ansah
v. Marketing, Sponsorship and Media Sub-committee – Mr. Magnus RexDanquah
vi. Finance and Budgeting Sub-committee – Mr. Salisu Omaru/Mr. Emmanuel Oteng

Significantly, all the sub-committees are headed by members of the IGCC. Most of the decisions or work of the Sub-committees are ratified and approved by the IGCC before implementation. This is to ensure proper supervision and alignment of all the work of the Sub-committees into the overall objective of the IGCC. The Sub-Committees have defined roles set by the mother Committee. It must be noted that all the Sub-committees have been meeting regularly and feed into the IGCC’s meetings.

ITTF / ATTF TOURNAMENT
The first major task for the IGCC after its inauguration was the successful organization of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and Africa Table Tennis Federation (ATTF) Championships in April 2019 in Accra, Ghana. The IGCC made strenuous effort to secure the Bukom Emporium for the venue of the tournament, and also ensured that it was ready before the tournament commenced. The technical and financial report covering the whole tournament is ready and presentation would be done soon.

TH EDITION OF THE AFRICAN GAMES IN RABAT, MOROCCO – (AUGUST 2019)

Presently, the IGCC’s focus is on the preparation of Ghana’s Teams for participation in 12th African Games in Rabat, Morocco, mid-August 2019. The Committee has, so far, met eight (8) times to deliberate on the planning and preparations towards the Games. The various Sub-committees have drawn up road maps or activities geared towards a successful preparation and have been meeting the teams in camps.

In conclusion, members of the IGCC have resolved in our collective determination to organize lean but effective Teams of medal hopefuls for over 20 disciplines to represent Ghana in Morocco.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Chairmen of the various Sub-Committees, especially Technical and Protocol, will take turns today to address you on the detailed accounts of the work done so far and the way forward.
