RELEASE
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has granted approval for the Accra Sports Stadium to host Ghana’s upcoming 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan, on Friday October 11, 2024.
Following CAF’s withdrawal of approval of Baba Yara Stadium, Ghana made a request to CAF, through the Ghana Football Association (GFA), to inspect other national facilities, including the Accra Sports Stadium, as suitable venues for CAF/FIFA Category 3 matches.
After an independent assessment undertaken by CAF, the Accra Sports Stadium was given approval as home grounds for Ghana to host their Sudanese counterparts for the next 2025 AFCON qualifying match.
While welcoming CAF’s decision, the Ministry wishes to reiterate its commitment to ensuring sports infrastructure and facilities at our national stadia meet the highest standards for international sporting competitions.
In line with this, the Ministry has directed the National Sports Authority (NSA) to, henceforth, apply strict maintenance schedule for our national stadia and other facilities.
Concurrently, issues raised by CAF with the Baba Yara and Cape Coast stadia, are being addressed, and we look forward to another inspection by CAF soon, for restoration of the status of these national stadia as approved venues for CAF and FIFA matches.
The Ministry expresses its gratitude to all stakeholders who supported the Ministry in securing CAF approval for the Accra Sports Stadium and urges close collaboration and cooperation with all stakeholders in the development, management and maintenance of sporting facilities across the country.
